Math at SWS

Welcome to the Community of Mathematical Thinkers at SWS!

We believe all people have the ability to achieve in math.  We strive to create learning experiences that help students develop deep mathematical understanding and a growth mindset.  We want all students to leave SWS loving math and knowing they have the power to grow their brains!  At home you can reenforce key actions that students are learning to become creative and persistent mathematicians:

  • Believe in Myself: Everyone can learn and grow.  Keep trying!
  • Visualize Math: Drawing, building, acting, and visualizing help us think.
  • Make Mistakes: We learn more when we make mistakes.
  • Be Curious and Flexible: Always ask questions.  Try it a different way.
  • Collaborate: We help others learn.  Others help us learn.
  • Take My Time: We don’t need to be the fastest.  We need to think carefully.

I hope this blog helps you better understand the math learning going on at SWS.  I hope it also gives you some new ideas to reflect on your own math thinking.  If you have questions or comments please reach out to Maurice Tome, Math Instructional Coach at maurice.tome@dc.gov.
